Christmas is the busiest time of the year for the Salvos, and in 2020, the collective consequences of bushfires, drought and the COVID-19 pandemic mean now more than ever, Australians – especially vulnerable ones – are experiencing increased hardship.

Nadia grew up surrounded by hardship and violence. When she became a single parent, she worked hard to ensure her kids didn’t grow up in the same environment. In separate incidents, she was attacked at her front door by a stranger and found out that her boyfriend was behind the threats to her and her children.

She fled her home in the city for the safety of her children and was helped by The Salvation Army Victoria in securing transitional housing and much more. 

“I think what surprised me even more was they didn’t just give me a transitional house by itself – they also helped to fill my cupboard with food and helped with clothes for kids, linen and toiletries. They helped so much,” Nadia shares. 

She says the support from The Salvation Army and local mental health team has helped the family find a sense of stability while they work on overcoming challenges, especially during COVID-19. 

Christmas is the most challenging time for families doing it tough. The Salvos distributed over 34,400 toys worth over $1.3 million to families in need throughout the season last year. With your help, we can do the same this year.
